In the 1952 novel Mary Poppins in the Park, the nanny herself tells an upset young Michael, ‘I understand that you’re behaving like a Hottentot.’” And it’s not only fools like the Admiral who invoke this language. It’s a parody of black menace it’s even posted on a white nationalist website as evidence of the film’s racial hierarchy. “We’re in on the joke, such as it is: These aren’t really black Africans they’re grinning white dancers in blackface. When the dark figures of the chimney sweeps step in time on a roof, a naval buffoon, Admiral Boom, shouts, ‘We’re being attacked by Hottentots!’ and orders his cannon to be fired at the ‘cheeky devils.’ “The 1964 film replays this racial panic in a farcical key. When he tries to approach the cook, she threatens to quit: ‘If that Hottentot goes into the chimney, I shall go out the door,’ she says, using an archaic slur for black South Africans that recurs on page and screen. “’Don’t touch me, you black heathen,’ a housemaid screams in Mary Poppins Opens the Door (1943), as a sweep reaches out his darkened hand. “This might seem like an innocuous comic scene if Travers’s novels didn’t associate chimney sweeps’ blackened faces with racial caricature,” he writes. Pollack-Pelzner flatly calls the scene ‘blacking up’, and while it may seem innocuous, it has other more troubling connotations. In an article in the New York Times, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, a professor of English and gender studies professor at Oregon’s Linfield College, has said that in the book by PL Travers, the sequence signifies ‘racial panic’. The chimney sweep dance in Mary Poppins, led by Dick van Dyk’s affable jack-of-all-trades Burt, harks back to ‘blackface’ tropes, an academic has claimed.

Fine tuning placement of things can be a bit more hassle though as the cursor isn’t quite as accurate in its movement as I’d have liked. This can make building a little more fiddly, though a quick undo/redo function helps with any accidental mistakes. On console we are of course restricted to controller input. There’s a real skill involved, and as a mobile title it works brilliantly. At any point we can set the game in motion and see how our structure holds up, and are able to stop it at any time to make some adjustments as it inevitably comes crashing down before our eyes. We need to build struts, supports, use cabling, consider the weight of the bridge and the cargo going across it and more it can really test our planning skills. The tricky part is in building genuinely functioning bridges, and doing so under each levels budget. Using various materials, such as wood or steel, we need to build bridges to get them there in one piece. If you’ve not seen the Bridge Constructor titles before, let me give a quick overview of the gameplay a level is presented, usually with a person or car one end that needs getting to the opposite side of the screen. If anything, the Walking Dead tie in had me more willing to persevere, even if it is simply a familiar face to proceedings. That’s no to say BC:TWD is a bad time though. As soon as anything more complicated than a straight bridge is needed I struggled like all hell to keep the resource budget under the levels goal. I’ve never really gotten into the previous titles despite my fondness for this style of puzzle game as, quite frankly, I’m terrible at them. There is no voice acting but ClockStone Studio have manged to get the general character traits of each right in the text dialogue, even if Eugene’s complicated prose is a little over done here.īut the characters and setting are just an interesting hook to catch the attention the real meat of the game is the same physics based gameplay that the series is known for. It’s hardly a deal breaker mind, and they only really show up in these cut scenes for a short while. I put likenesses in quotes because, well, they are recognisable to a degree but the art style does their rugged, apocalyptic charm no favours. In what could be one of the more unexpected crossovers in recent times, the well regarded Bridge Constructor series has teamed up with The Walking Dead to forma fun, though bizarre, little puzzle title.īridge Constructor: The Walking Dead takes its cast from the AMC Television series rather than the comics, so we get “likenesses” of Daryl, Michonne and Eugene in amongst some new characters. This is not necessarily a bad thing, per se. Story: This game takes the fundamental story provided by Parasite Eve and gives it an X-Files/Conspiracy twist. This is mode of play is similar to Bounty Mode, but much more brutal. But wait… there’s more! Completing the game on Scavenger Mode presents you with a final option: Nightmare Mode. This ratchets up the difficulty by another notch. Finally, after reaching a certain rank in either Replay or Bounty mode, you can unlock Scavenger Mode. Replay Mode (an easier, New Game + style experience) and Bounty Mode (this is essentially Hard Mode). Once you’ve completed the game the first time, you do unlock two additional modes of play. After an hour of two of playtime, you tend to get the feel for things and the game gets a lot easier. But rather, I found the toughest aspect of the game to be the mastery of the game controls (ie: working through the stiff and stubborn playcontrol). The biggest challenges here are not found in tough boss mechanics or random encounters. So it’s very possible to enjoy everything the game has offer even if you missed it the first time around.ĭifficulty: Variable – Parasite Eve II offers a single difficulty level for first time players. Thankfully, you can replay the game over upon completion. Getting the best ending on your first time through is unlikely unless you have a guide. The game does feature multiple endings depending on certain choices made during your playthrough. I just wish it would have kept more of the unique elements from the first game, instead of of settling in to what has now become a cookie-cutter format. The atmosphere is there and it is very well done. But the action picks up again towards the end. I personally found the middle section of the game to be a bit repetitive and at times, boring. So, praise and gripes aside – how does it play? Parasite Eve II is solid and has hours of content. This game provides the best of the what original Playstation could offer. But the sprites in the game itself and the cinematic sequences are very well done. So it’s beneficial to take out any NMCs that you encounter, even if fleeing is an option.ĭespite taking a step back in the areas of playcontrol and originality, Parasite Eve II offers some very stunning visuals. These points can be exchanged for weapons and items. Aide from experience, Aya also earns Bounty Points with each monster she eliminates. However, EXP in this game is reserved for strengthening and unlocking her Parasite Abilities. Thankfully, Parasite Eve II has a targeting system that does a lot to help with the pain-point caused the crummy playcontrol.Īya also does not level up in the traditional sense. Sadly, the movement controls really make navigating problematic during combat, especially early on in the game. Aya is able to run around unfettered and even change zones while engaging an enemy. This allows for much more freedom during combat. The combat no longer relies on meters and timers and it’s not locked into a specified battle area. To be honest, the changes from the original game are a mixed bag. Parasite Eve II has even adapted the familiar and irritating “tank-style” playcontrol scheme, as well as other aspects that have become synonymous with the Resident Evil franchise. In fact, it looks and feels very much like a Resident Evil game. This leaves the game as strictly an action-based survival horror title. This time around, nearly all RPG elements have been stripped away. The first Parasite Eve was an interesting mix of RPG and survival horror action. While the storyline builds off of the original game, the actual gameplay is considerably different. One in which she has unknowingly been a participant in. It is during this investigation that she unravels a shocking conspiracy. The area is infested with NMCs and Aya investigates a lead hinting at their point of origin. Her next assignment brings her to a rural town in the middle of the Mojave desert. The creature escapes but Aya is persistent in learning more about this unusual being. While completing her mission she has an encounter with what appears to be a humanoid NMC. The game begins when she is deployed to Los Angeles to help put down a sudden burst of NMC activity. Her job is to hunt down and eliminate any remaining Neo-Mitochondria Creatures (NMCs). After what is now known as the “New York Incident”, Aya was recruited into a secret unit of the FBI called M.I.S.T. This game picks up three years after the events of the original. I really enjoyed the first Parasite Eve game and I was very excited to experience the next chapter. It took longer than expected, but my review for Parasite Eve II is finally here! Two years after the release of the original game, Square followed up with the second entry in the series. The two best teams in groups A, B and C qualify for the main round in the LANXESS arena in Cologne, while the top two of groups D, E and F move on to the Barclays Arena in Hamburg. The Olympiahalle Munich is looking forward to hosting Iceland (group C, if qualified) and world champions Denmark (group F). The SAP Arena in Mannheim awaits Croatia (group B, if qualified) and the current European champions Sweden (group E). Overall, the 24 teams will be drawn to six groups of four.įurthermore, six teams have already been seeded: Germany in group A and Norway (if they qualify) in group D for Berlin (Mercedes-Benz-Arena). The eight second ranked teams and the four best third ranked teams from the Qualifiers will make up pots 3 and 4. Hosts Germany are in pot 2 together with five first ranked teams from the Qualifiers. Sweden, Spain and Denmark as the teams ranked first to third at the Men’s EHF EURO 2022 are already qualified and seeded in pot 1 together with three teams which will rank first at the 2024 Qualifiers. The European Handball Federation has confirmed the draw procedure for the occasion. If the number of 50,000 inside the stadium is reached, a world record for the highest attendance at a handball match will be set. More than 40,000 tickets have already been sold. 50,000 fans are expected to attend the championship’s first two matches, including Germany’s opening game. The draw’s location is the same where is history is set to be made at the EHF EURO’s opening day on 10 January 2024: the MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA in Dusseldorf. They know when to pick up on certain information and they'll appreciate a little trust with you spreading it thin and weaving it into the narrative, as opposed to you forcing it on them with big information dumps. You have to respect that they've been to movies and have watched series episodes before. You have to trust the audience or script reader. Too many screenwriters lay the exposition on thick through on-the-nose dialogue because they fear that the audience won't pick up on more subtle information. It can be worked into the story and character arcs as turning points, reveals, plants, and payoffs. When it's brief, it's subtle and fits into the narrative better. There are certainly ways to utilize those expositional tools well, usually by keeping the usage of them - and the accompanying information - brief. When you use monologues, extended scenes and sequences, and undramatic moments of characters reading information aloud (including background characters like newscasters), that's laying it on thick. Spread Exposition Thin, Not Thick - Trust and Respect the AudienceĮxposition is better if spread out thin, as opposed to laying it on thick. If it's not partial to the story, plot, and character arcs, ditch it. The first step is to be aware of exposition - what it is and why you need it. So how can you avoid writing bad exposition? It's just an information dump that slows any narrative momentum down. There's no action, no suspense, no plant, no payoff, and no compelling beginning, middle, or end. The problem with exposition - good or bad - is that it is utterly boring and lacking in drama. Read ScreenCraft's A Simple Way to Make Dream Sequences and Flashbacks Work! When screenwriters use dream sequences, flashbacks, and extended prologues to explain backstory and plot elements, that's often bad exposition. When screenwriters use the crutch of TV and radio newscasts to share detailed information about plot elements, that's often bad exposition. When screenplays utilize a lot of incredibly detailed title cards (text that appears onscreen) to explain backstory and plot elements, that's often bad exposition. When characters are learning pivotal information by reading aloud to themselves from papers or computer screens, that's often bad exposition. When characters are talking about pivotal events and information rather than the screenwriter showing the audience through the live narrative, that's often bad exposition. And sometimes they don't even know that they're doing it. It's when screenwriters use expositional dialogue as a crutch to save on time, pages, and effort that there's a problem. The cinematic story is told through visuals and screenwriters are tasked to show rather than tell. So What Is Bad Exposition?įilm (and television) is a visual medium. These nuggets of information usually exist outside of the direct narrative and therefore are difficult to properly insert into the story and plot in a seamless fashion without halting all story and character momentum.īut that doesn't mean exposition is bad. Exposition is an essential tool for storytelling. Defining Expositionīelieve or not, the problem with exposition in screenplays is that many writers don't really know what it is.Įxposition is comprised of those pieces of vital information - often shared in dialogue - that are necessary for the audience to know and understand in order for character arcs and plot points to make sense. And unfortunately, most screenplays fall under the latter category. Make no mistake, exposition is necessary within a screenplay - but there's a good way to do it, and a bad way to do it. Do you know where your scripts stand when it comes to good or bad exposition? On the bad side, he had just lost both of his hands. Spongebob stared at where his hands should be in shock. Patrick opened his mouth, took the apple fully in his mouth and -a bit too happily- bit down on it, taking Spongebob's hands with it. It smelt fine and looked a lot better than the grass he had just eaten. "Easy." Patrick sniffed the apple furiously. He didn't have boating school anytime soon so he was sure he could spare this one apple, besides he could always borrow from Mr. "Easy there big fella." Spongebob reached into his back pocket and pulled out an apple he was saving for Mrs. He held out his hand towards Patrick only to be greeted by a snarl, almost as if Patrick hadn't quite remembered him. He was almost too nervous to do or say anything -almost- but he was not about to let this moment slip from his slim fingers. Spongebob's heart raced with anticipation. Besides, he wasn't going to just spit out his yellow cum when the time did come. Especially if the sacrifice came with a hope of getting to see Spongebob's porous cock. Grass was such a disgusting taste to Patrick, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices. Patrick knew that being a horse would be different, but he never thought it could be this hard. He chewed the grass and, with a hard swallow, forced it into his stomach. Patrick looked up at Spongebob with the grass still hanging out of his mouth, and stared Spongebob dead in the eyes. What kind of relationship would they have if it was built on Spongebob not trusting him? It wouldn't be a very good one. "Patrick you are right, you can be a horse!" Spongebob couldn't believe that he had even doubted Patrick for a second. Spongebob stopped in front of him and leaned towards him, with his hands on his knees. Spongebob raced down his stairs and out his door -somehow magically dressed- towards Patrick who happened to be eating a stray patch of grass. Spongebob raced so fast from the window that his face mask lingered in the air for a split second then fell to the ground in a green puddle. Now was finally his chance to see one up close for the very first time -ever since his a coma from a head injury in Episode 42, Season 3 that is- and he couldn't be happier! He had always wanted to see a horse up close! Spongebob would always start to sob himself to death whenever his parents had denied his requests to see the seahorses. "Oooh, horsey!" Spongebob threw the blanket to the side of him -causing it to cover Gary- and leaned back on his feet, arms high in the air. Spongebob stood on foot and let out a slight -yet happy- sigh. Spongebob twirled around with the blanket held up beside his face, a look of pure wonder and -dare I say it?- love written across his porous features. The more he thought about it, the less and less he wanted a "Moo" to be a horse sound if he were honest. He would have bet his virginity to Pearl if it wasn't. He wasn't quite sure what every sound a horse made but he was positive that was one. Patrick stopped short in front of Spongebob's flowers, right under the window he was starting out of, and "Moo"ed. Patrick could feel his head start to enlarge at the thought of Spongebob dressed in nothing but assless chaps with a large leather whip draped around his broad yellow shoulders. Oh how Patrick just wanted Spongebob to come out already and whip him like the naughty seahorse he was. Patrick trotted back and forth between Spongebob's house, making sure to keep both his head and ass high. Patrick reared up and gave a slight whinny, kicking his two front hands -scratch that, hoofs- in the air. He hadn't known that something like this would be able to bring him so much joy, but alas it has. A large smile spread across his Spongy features. He almost couldn't believe his own two eyes. Spongebob looked out the window at the beautiful sight before him. "Huh? Gary!" Spongebob lept out of the bed with the sheet still tucked tightly in his left hand and raced over to his window, which Gary the Snail was sitting under. The neighing became louder and Spongebob's eyes flew open, tossing the curlers behind his now jolted upright body. It was embarrassing enough the first time Squidward had to run over and help him get them undone, Spongebob wasn't sure if he could handle that again. "Ah not yet Gary, give me a few more minutes." He laid his spongy self back and stretched, closing his eyes, being careful not get the eyelash curlers stuck. Spongebob rolled over as he heard a faint "neigh", making sure not to touch the seaweed mask he had put on after his.actions last night. If anything, Gary had put Spongebob on the mattresses again at some point in the night. All he remembered really was sleeping was on the ground because Gary was sleeping in the bed. He didn't remember when or how he had gotten back onto his triple mattress bed again. Spongebob lets out a sigh as he contemplates on whether or not he should get out bed today. We believe that individual investors can better represent their own interests than the companies who productize them. This coalition of investors is guided by five core principles of: Transparency, Simplicity and Fairness, Investor Choice and Control, Best Execution, and Better Settlement and Clearing. While this coalition is being guided by these firms, the movement is based on grassroots advocacy and the education and empowerment of individual investors. On March 3, an investor advocacy coalition spearheaded by investing information company Urvin Finance, comprehensive fractional investing platform, institutional equities execution platform Proof Trading, and others, launched and published an Investor Bill of Rights in a call for comprehensive market reforms that will empower individual investors. Additionally, there is a groundswell of support voicing their concerns related to PFOF, excessive off-exchange trading, and rallying behind comprehensive reform to market structure. We also understand that the issue of PFOF is top-of-mind for you, having made several public comments raising concerns about the practice, the resulting concentration of power, the misalignment of incentives and the flawed standard of best execution. Throughout 2021, the debate around PFOF only grew with a House of Representatives bill to ban the practice, and a Senate bill introduced as the ‘Investor Freedom Act of 2021’ to prevent such a ban and protect PFOF profiteers. Further, their ability to claim best execution is part of the flaw of the system, as even within the current structure better outcomes are possible on an order-by-order, and aggregated basis. speculation and day trading) and risky activity (i.e. Leaning on the flawed argument that they categorically provide retail customers with best price execution quality, there is little by way of self-regulation to foment change or prevent applications designed to optimize transaction volume (i.e. Defenders of PFOF have claimed that retail brokers who route to high-speed traders (in exchange for PFOF) provide better price execution for investors and that it’s a net positive, despite creating an inherent misalignment between these platforms and their customers, and despite public evidence to the contrary. PFOF and excessive off-exchange trading persist because so many trading platforms rely on the revenue it generates, essentially productizing their clients. Such an approach would also consider exchange rebates and access fees, intelligent tick sizes, an order-by-order best execution standard, incentives to reduce fragmentation of markets (e.g., ending the subsidization of exchanges with SIP revenue), and ensuring that the NBBO properly reflects all supply and demand in the market. While there is no silver bullet to fixing markets, we believe that a holistic approach can solve many problems. The SEC needs to take action to change the current market structure, rejuvenate the price discovery process, incentivize diversity and competition, and simplify our markets. Included in this, we need regulatory intervention to repair a system that results in inferior execution quality for retail and institutional investors, and that has damaged markets and widened spreads for all participants. We are writing to urge you to address PFOF and the disparities in market structure that lead to excessive off-exchange trading as a top priority, and propose a rule that will truly reform our markets, not simply result in more disclosure. The segmentation of retail order flow away from lit markets means less competition and materially wider spreads as exchange toxicity increases. PFOF creates an intractable conflict-of-interest for brokers whose financial incentives are placed at odds with their duty of best execution. These companies face little competition and amass greater market power, as two of these firms are responsible for a huge share of trading, both on-exchange and off. Gaps created by the lack of meaningful competition, transparency and simplicity have resulted in billions of dollars in annual Payment for Order Flow (PFOF) made from high-speed trading firms to brokers, while these firms generate multiples of this in revenue. But as more people earnestly participate in the markets than ever before, the opacity and complexity of markets has left them concerned that: markets are not adequately providing price discovery that too much power is concentrated in too few firms and that they cannot trust such a complex system that lacks appropriate transparency. In the last 18 months alone, 25 million new investors joined the stock market, and at their peak, retail investors made up more than 25% of the U.S. Charts and tables are logically grouped and at all times inside fast attain.
